Some scenes of the gospel are unforgettable – the one coming to my mind today is one of them (Matthew 9:11-13).
As always, the Pharisees are watching for an occasion to challenge Jesus.
But, this time, they do so indirectly – they question his apostles:
“Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

The apostles do not have to explain – Jesus has heard the Pharisees et he answers them directly.
His words have a pertinent and uncanny tone which unsettles their devious questioning.
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick…
I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
As I contemplate the scene, I am faced with a question:
Am I in the group of the so-called ‘righteous’ who pretend they have no need of Jesus?
Or, do I acknowledge that I am in great need of him… a need that is on-going?…
This period of Lent is a privileged moment to dare recognizing myself.
