The theme for World Occupational Therapy Day 2024 is ‘Occupational Therapy for All’. The theme reflects the important role of the profession to facilitate the ability of individuals, communities and populations to participate in the activities that they want, need or are expected to do in their daily lives.

Why Is World Occupational Therapy Day Celebrated? 

World Occupational Therapy Day is celebrated to thank occupational therapists and the work they do to help others. It can help people to understand their role in greater depth, and allow occupational therapists to share their goals with others.

The event also promotes occupational therapy as a profession. It can be an extremely rewarding career for those who choose it, so it’s important that as many people as possible understand what occupational therapy is all about and how they can enter the profession.

What Do Occupational Therapists Do?

Occupational therapy is a branch of healthcare; occupational therapists help people of all ages in lots of different areas. They can support people with their mobility, motor skills, and daily tasks. Their role is to work with a person, identify strengths and difficulties that they experience in everyday life, and find ways to tackle these things. 

Occupational therapists can help adults and children with mobility problems, SEND, and those struggling to adapt after an operation. They can also help elderly people who are finding that ageing is affecting how they carry out their daily tasks.

No matter what the person’s circumstances are, an occupational therapist’s aim is to develop someone’s confidence and independence in carrying out their daily tasks, or other activities.

Secretaries’ Day takes place every Wednesday in the last week of April to honor the hard work of secretaries who have long been under-appreciated.

This day has developed and had many names over the years, such as Admin Day, and it occurs on Administrative Professionals Week. It recognizes secretaries and all the hard work they perform. There are many ways to celebrate and honor your secretary, but the most important one is simply saying thank you. Secretary jobs are seen as less important though they are vital and help other people be able to accomplish their jobs.

Clerical jobs are very important in ensuring that businesses function well and thrive. Secretaries play a very important role but are often not valued for their efforts. This job position has a long history, with the word ‘secretarius’ first being used in ancient Rome to refer to someone overseeing official and confidential business for powerful individuals.

Now, people are finally beginning to show some appreciation for the hard work of secretaries all over the world. While secretaries are now stereotyped as women, clerical jobs were reserved for men. This change started in the 1880s. Women began joining these roles as they required no education. Secretary jobs were the start of women joining the workforce. Clerical jobs became even more popular among women when men went off to fight in the war.

The hard efforts of secretaries were first recognized during World War II. The depression and low birth rate caused a shortage of administrative workers. This influenced the founding of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (then called the National Secretaries Association) in 1942. This non-profit organization aimed to attract more workers to this career path and shed light on its importance. In 1951, they administered the Certified Professional Secretary exam. They now offer many more related certifications.

World Teachers’ Day – 5 October

World Teachers’ Day on October 5th honors teachers and teacher organizations making vital contributions to the education and development of our future leaders.

#WorldTeacherDay

If you think back to your school years, you are bound to think of at least one teacher who made a difference in your life. Maybe they helped set you on the right career path. One may have encouraged you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Or maybe they helped you when you felt unaccepted by your peers. Even though a teacher’s job is to teach, they wear many hats. They are also counselors and friends. To some students, they may even be guardian angels.

While teaching is indeed a noble career, it is a challenging one, as well. It seems that more than ever, teachers are having a difficult time. Some of the things they contend within the classroom each day are disruptive environments, lack of resources, and limited time. For teachers who have many students, it can be difficult to provide individualized attention.

As teachers prepare students for the future, it’s more important than ever to recognize the difficult job they do.

Firefighters’ Day – 4 May

“The role of a firefighter in today’s society – be it urban, rural, natural environment, volunteer, career, industrial, defence force, aviation, motor sport, or other is one of dedication, commitment and sacrifice – no matter what country we reside and work in. In the fire service we fight together against one common enemy – fire – no matter what country we come from, what uniform we wear or what language we speak.”  Lt JJ Edmondson, 1999

Firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property. Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry. In all cases it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life.

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.

International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May. On this date you are invited to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all. At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters world wide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year.
